How Do I Know If I Need Glasses?

Are you looking for a sign that you might need glasses? Try reading a sign, and if it looks blurry it could be time to book an eye exam! Booking in for an eye examination with an optometrist is one of the best ways to determine if you would benefit from prescription eye or sunglasses.

There are tell-tale clues you might need prescription eyeglasses or prescription sunglasseses:

Blurry or Wavy Vision

One of the first signs that many people notice when their eyesight begins to decline is that their vision becomes blurry or wavy. Blurry vision is surprisingly easy to recognise:  if you can no longer recognise a friend or loved one as they approach you, or you can’t read a book or magazine clearly without holding it at an awkward angle then this could be a sign that you are either long or short sighted.

Struggling to view objects that are both close up and far away? This isn’t unusual, and could well be a sign of an astigmatism, which is a relatively common condition.

Double Vision

We all see double occasionally (usually when we’ve had one too many beers) but if you are seeing double when you aren’t under the influence then this should act as a clear sign that you need to head to the optometrist.

Double vision is a sign of weakened corneas and eye muscles. In older individuals, it could also be a sign that you are developing cataracts.

Headaches

If you have never really suffered with headaches before, but are now struggling with them all the time it could well be a sign that your eyes are strained and your poor vision is affecting your brain.

Headaches are a very common sign that you may need glasses, often caused because your weakened vision is forcing the muscles in your eyes to work harder to focus.

Troubles adjusting from dark to light

Troubles adjusting from dark to light is a relatively common eye problem that many of us experience as we begin to age. You may well notice this problem in the morning as you switch on the light in your bedroom, or when you are driving at night and find you don’t recognise objects in the distance.

The main cause of this is weakened muscles in the iris, and this is something that can easily be corrected by wearing eye glasses.

Seek Support

Recognise one or all of these symptoms? It’s important to seek a definitive eye test sooner rather than later.

Many people need some kind of assistance with their vision, and the likelihood that you will need the support of glasses will increase with age. According to the Vision Impact Institute, approximately 60 percent of the world’s population relies on some kind of vision correction to have perfect vision.

It’s likely that you won’t realise quite how much you rely on your eyesight until it begins to suffer, and you could well be putting off going to the optometrist because you don’t like the thought of wearing glasses. The good news is that modern eyeglasses can look very chic and fashion forward, and you will be spoilt for choice when picking out your new design. So, don’t let your fears about wearing glasses put you off doing the best thing for your health!
